Behind the scenes: 2016 Christmas cards

Oh, how I love paper!

I don't even know when it started but even since I remember I love everything to do with paper. From handwritten letters, to photographs and books and notebooks. Then, I'd start buying / hoarding paper, like, just because its pretty colours or interesting textures or cool patterns. I've tried to craft my way with paper too, from book binding, notebook making, to collages, to pompoms to piƱatas, definitely an eclectic mix but it all for my love for paper. It's been years since I keep a drawer unit full of paper (told you, I'm a paper hoarder) and is always the best when I get to use it!

All this to tell you a story: This summer we spent a week in Nova Scotia, a place that has the effect of filling me with inspiration. This time it was not the exception. One day, Amelia and I visited the Public Library and Amelia got into herself to play in the computers. While I was sitting, defeated in the fact that she wasn't in the mood to check out books with me but just play games, my eye caught the cover of this book that had colourful flowers on it. I lunged to grab it immediately, like a hungry person being offered a box of warm donuts and my, oh my it was love at first sight. I could feel the sparkle coming out of my eyes and heart in that very moment. The book is called From paper to Petal and if you like paper or flowers, gawd, you NEED to see it. After hungrily finishing it all in one afternoon I went straight out to the nearest Omer DeSerres (for those outside Canada, it's a art supply shop)completely set on getting crepe paper and all the supplies I'd need to start making paper flowers. Alas, it was a bit disappointing to find out this shop doesn't carry much interesting stuff for paper flower-making but, hey, what's Etsy and Amazon for, right? I made my first order of crepe paper that same day, eager to receive it and start making!

Once I got all my supplies and made my first flower, I knew I was hooked. I felt like paper had a bigger purpose in life now and that I had found it! Total revelation. Ever since, I've been dedicating a few hours a day to make flowers and beside finding it immensely rewarding, it's also a relaxing and calming activity, which is something that benefits me greatly.

So, all this to tell you that after starting making these flowers I knew I had to find more ways to put them to use and share them with everybody and the idea of making holiday cards came up. Next, I invite you to see a few photos of the process, from flower making to  photography. I hope you enjoy it!

It was really fun to make all the flowers, practising my -poor- calligraphy skills and do paper cuts for the words. Then the photoshot was great and then the editing and looking forward to the final result after so many weeks of working on this project! Then the graphic design part wasn't going that well (I suck at it) but then I had lots of help when Christen Strang jumped in to save the day and helped me get ready for printing! Thank you so much girl! So as you can see, a long but very cool process.

If you'd like to see more about the finished cards, visit my previous blog post or simply visit my shop! Thank you so much for your support!

Back home

So we are back after a lovely week in Mexico with our family. So happy to have been there, so grateful for the break and the family and love and all the delicious food. But we are back and we are also happy and grateful for being here again.

So many things to do, it's crazy, crazy but I'm absolutely determined to take it EASY as, a week before our vacations I had Bell's Palsy, do you know what that is? something super weird (but surprisingly common, I realize now!) that happens in a nerve that controls face movements and half my face was paralyzed. I was so scared, it was so weird but the doctors were really nice and helped me a lot and explained lots of things. And then in Mexico I talked with my family and lots of people have suffered from that so they helped me a lot to understand. It supposedly happens due to a viral infection that unluckily affects this little tube on the side of your face/neck that carries a nerve inside, so the tube gets swollen and the nerve is all thigh inside so your face goes all weird. But it can also happens because of stress and, hmm, that's me right there.

I'm great now, I feel great and my face is all back to normal but I'm still taking some medicine and well, just trying to get myself to a point of reason and care so I know I can control my stress levels better. Wish  me luck on that :)

Anyway! it was great to go see my family and enjoy Mexico for a bit, that helps a lot! And here are some colorful photos from the trip. I hope you like them and the colours make you as happy as they make me! I came back really inspired, the desert never fails to do that to me :)

Colorful painted eggs, filled with confetti.
Candy :)
Small pinatas!
Here's my little one admiring pinatas at this atelier we went: it was a very old house FULL of pinatas and the studio where they make them.
Mountains in the north of Mexico like to show off at sunset.
The desert, the mountains, the sky, the light. I miss that a lot. So happy to behold that sight again.
A mountain pass on our way to the airport.

Thank you for reading this! And if you have happened to have Bell's Palsy and have any advice or questions for me, I'd love to read it in the comments bellow, thank you! xx

Lately

Hello there!

Oh how glad I am if you are here reading this post! I've felt so lost in the last few weeks and I really feel like I need to get hold on things and time again!

I've been just so busy with life, shows, family affairs, orders and things like that. It shouldn't be hard to keep up as those are normal things but, for some reason, my mind is all over the place and I feel SLOW. Anyway, I'm here and I'm ready to start updating things around!

One of the main concerns of me lately is that I haven't been able to even edit the photos of my new collection, let alone to list my pretty new jewelles on The Angry Weather shop. I SO WANT TO SHOW YOUUUUU!

But today is the day when I'm start editing and getting things ready. Wish me luck!

Meanwhile, I'll let you with some of the things I love today. I hope you enjoy this selection, too (click on the images for the source!):

Helpful phrase and beautiful papercut.
I love these cushions by Chocolate Creative.
Mountais...I don't have the source! if anyone knows the photographer, please let me know!
The best advise.
Atelier L'Echoppe in Montreal. Dreaming of having a work space like that one day!
Nicola Odermann Photography. I want to travel...
...Specially to Iceland...

Have a lovely day!

Vivid images from a Lost Empire

Bellow, you'll find the work of Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944), Russian photographer. In the early 1900's he began an ambitious project supported by Tsar Nicholas II where he traveled around Russian taking photographs and documenting the empire: from architecture, to landscape, advances in technology, to ethnicity, daily living and everything in between.

he was an amazing photographer, capturing the essence of the simplest moments. One of the things that makes his work most peculiar though, is that he was a pioneer in color photography and he developed a technique that consisted in taken three photographs in a rapid sequence using different filters for each image (red, green and blue) then layer the negatives to obtain a color photography. This technique allows us to enjoy his photographs of a Russia on the verge of revolution in full color.

I go head over heels for photography and nostalgia, so you can imagine my awe when I saw this images for the first time (got there thanks to Fine Little Day blog). I still spend time during the day just wandering on those images, I swear. These may be some of the most inspiring photos I've seen in my life and the fact that they are in color and were taken 100 years ago has a lot to do with me falling in love with them. There is something so nostalgic about looking into the technicolor life of someone who lived 100 years ago in a world that was about to change dramatically.

All images from The Empire That Was Russia a collection from the (US) Library of Congress.

There are a bunch of beautiful cropped images of this collection around the web, but when I got to the source in the library of congress web site, I fell in love with this un-cropped, original versions from the negative; the little defects and the way you can see the filters it's amazing. I amply recommend you to visit the entire collection and read the titles of the photos you like the most, the stories of the people/places in the photos are as compelling as the images themselves.
